Navigating the Comal River

A Guide to Tubing and River Etiquette in New Braunfels, TX

Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, New Braunfels offers a quintessential Texan experience: tubing down the crystal-clear waters of the Comal River. Whether you’re a local seeking a weekend escape or a traveler craving an authentic Lone Star State adventure, tubing the Comal River is an absolute must. But before you grab your tube and sunscreen, it’s essential to understand the unspoken rules of the river and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

River Rules:

1. Respect the Environment:

  • The Comal River is a cherished natural resource, so it’s crucial to treat it with care and respect. Avoid littering, and always pack out what you pack in.
  • Stay on designated paths and refrain from trampling vegetation along the riverbanks.

2. Safety First:

  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket, especially if you’re not a strong swimmer. Texas law requires children under 13 to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket while tubing.
  • If you’re not a strong swimmer, consider getting out before the Tube Chute and walking around it before entering back into the river below the chute. If you’re unsure of it… it’s always smart to take the safer route.
  • Stay hydrated and apply sunscreen regularly, as the Texas sun can be intense, even on overcast days.

Haus TIP: Even if you’re enjoying a beer or a few, make sure you’re still drinking tons of water. No one likes heat exhaustion and a hangover.

  • Keep an eye out for potential hazards such as low-hanging branches, rocks, and shallow areas.

3. Mind Your Speed:

  • The Comal River is known for its gentle flow, making it ideal for a relaxing tubing experience. Keep your speed in check and avoid excessive splashing or rowdiness.
  • Respect other tubers by maintaining a safe distance and avoiding collisions when possible. During busy season, the river can get rather crowded. Be mindful of those around you.

4. Leave No Trace:

  •  Pack snacks and beverages in reusable containers to minimize waste.
  • Make sure to read over River Rules BEFORE heading down to the river. Park rangers will check coolers and your river items before you set a float, so make sure you’re prepared. You can read more in depth rules here.

Tubing Tips:

  • Plan your tubing adventure during the spring and summer months when water levels are typically higher and weather conditions are favorable.
  • Consider tubing on weekdays or early in the day to avoid crowds, especially during peak tourist season.
  • Bring waterproof pouches or dry bags to protect valuables such as phones, keys, and wallets from water damage.

Haus TIP: Check out Tipsy Tuber for drinks and River Safe Cups.

After your tubing excursion, explore the charming town of New Braunfels, known for its German heritage, delicious cuisine, and vibrant cultural scene.
